This illustration is to comemorate the first successful solo round-the-world voyage. Gipsy Moth IV is an iconic 53-foot British ketch class yacht, built for Sir Francis Chichester in 1965. She made history in 1966–1967 when she successfully completed a circumnavigation of the globe with a single sailor at the helm.
To celebrate one nautical legend, utilising the style of another legend seems most fitting. Therefore, this illustration is in the style of American Traditional Tattoo's, most namely, Sailor Jerry.
Using the colour pallete and styling of some of Sailor Jerry (Norman Keith Collins) earlier work, most notably his fully-rigged tall ships denoted with 'Homeward Bound'. Similar designs were often tattooed onto the chests of sailors who had passed through Cape Horn. This makes the design more applicable, given Chichester's return route,
